UPDATE! The Windsor Gardens Association and HUD have reached a settlement without the Association admitting any wrongdoing. The case was closed on August 6, 2010.
Dear Residents:
You may have recently seen news stories that discuss U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allegations that Windsor Gardens has engaged in discrimination against families with children. As you might imagine, we are perplexed that HUD should choose to focus on Denver’s oldest senior community -- one that has consistently met federal laws that guide senior living. We are in the process of addressing HUD’s allegation and for your information, have included the press release that we have sent to local media outlets and others in response to the allegations.
While we all like to view Windsor Gardens as “young at heart”, we are confident that the standard for a community to be over 80% aged 55 and older to be compliant in the eyes of the law are applicable to Windsor Gardens (this last year alone our census showed 95.57% of the people in the community are over the age of 55.). Likewise we are confident, that anyone who knows our community understands the intent of our senior-oriented programming and services.
We also recognize that HUD’s announcement has potentially impacted some individuals who would like to join our wonderful community. Please rest assured that we are working diligently to resolve this issue and again are happy to answer any questions you might have. Sincerely,
The Windsor Gardens Board of Directors
